Always keep the three fundamental elements in mind:

  1. Someone wants something.
  2. They’re having trouble getting it.
  3. Something will happen if they fail.

What is the story of the scene?

  1. What is true at the end that was not true at the beginning? What is different?

Prompt #1 - Someone asks another out on a date.

Prompt #2 - You’re fired.

Prompt #3 - What’s for dinner?

Prompt #4 - Can I stay at your place?

Prompt #5 - Shhhhhh.

Have Fun! Do not stress out.

A key thing to scene writing is knowing where you want to go. That’s the story.

It is okay, expected and desired to be surprised where a scene takes you.

Exploring is the point.

But when you know what the purpose of the scene is. you will have some way of deciding whether the discoveries are helpful, or pulling you away from what needs to happen.

The former is exciting and part of the fun. The latter dilutes your scene.
